KAYE MAHONEY: SCORES & PROGRESSIONS

February 14, 2008 – March 12, 2008
Opening reception February 14, 6-8 pm

Dillon Gallery is proud to present the new work of Kaye Mahoney, “Scores and Progressions.” This body of work presents two divergent media: abstract paintings and short digital video progressions of abstract paintings as they evolve.

In these paintings and their digital echoes, the progressions, Mahoney blends multiple layers, veils and snapshots either through traditional indirect painting techniques or stop motion digital processing. In doing so, she highlights the events, actions and markings that shape a creation and the impact of the past on the present. Mahoney conceives work with models of abstraction that approach musical, sensory and mnemonic concepts and experiences. They are arrangements and visual scores that encapsulate many slices of unmeasured time; the exhibition is experienced as the cumulative register of successive events witnessed in the present.

In instances where paintings are presented with their progression, the viewer is conscious of a performance of the process of abstraction. Retracing the painterly action in time by digital means, Mahoney presents the viewer with an entirely new way of observing the painters’ method. The experience of abstract painting shifts towards a temporally inflected way of seeing, one to which we are accustomed in our multifaceted and digitized world.

Kaye Mahoney was born in 1959 in Thailand and was educated in Italy, Australia and the United States. She lives and works in New York City. Mahoney has a BA/LLB from the Australian National University, an MFA from the New York Academy of Art and a degree in Fresco and Mural techniques from Il Laboratorio per Affresco di Vailnella, Tuscany,
