ELWOOD HOWELL: NEW PAINTINGS

June 7 – July 7, 2007
Opening Reception June 7, 6 – 8 PM

Elwood Howell has always had a very specific vision of the world, including knowing exactly where the horizon line should be: in the direction of the classicist’s view of infinity. Howell’s paintings ask you to gaze, and seem to reach at the distance beyond the curvature of the earth while implying all that is between.

A world expertly comprised of colors that easily form vague, yet recognizable patterns of nature. A nature comprised of subtle texture, great distance, seasonal hues, and enormous spaces, all of which hold your vision and thoughts. Howell idolizes the luxurious meadows of the world, revisiting repeatedly and at various seasons, positioned securely at a distance from metropolis and the masses. In his paintings, you stand in the forefront admiring the expanse of flora and concept as they march towards and ultimately dissipate at the far horizon.

Howell is a mature artist who has a knowledgeable command of the many facets of contemporary painting: the abstraction, the optical effects, the spontaneous as well as the honesty of the representational. Over decades these attributes have made Elwood Howell’s paintings favorites of the collecting public, institutions and design professionals.
